History of Club
Based on history by Commodore John G. Robinson* and later additions by Mrs. Robert M. Henshillwood
The history of the Vermilion Yacht Club and how it came to be founded is intimately tied to the development of the low-lying area between Linwood Park and the Vermilion River, known as the Vermilion Lagoons. In the early part of this century this area was a swamp owned by the Linwood Park Association and Mr. Patrick Smith neither of whom were interested in the land’s development. However, in 1928, Mr. Lou Wells, the owner of the LA Wells Construction Company, saw the possibilities of developing the property into a residential community with houses, waterways, a fine beach with a beach pavilion, and a yacht club with docks for boat owners.
On Memorial Day the Vermilion Yacht Club conducts a traditional ceremony which has taken place since our founding. At 12:30 PM VYC members, lagoon residents, the VYC Bridge, and all available Past Commodores, in full dress uniform, assemble on the front lawn. The ceremony consists of the Commodore welcome, flag raising and National Anthem, blessing of the fleet, presentation of officer flags, and the honoring of our fallen servicemen.
VYC Women’s League
The mission of the Vermilion Yacht Club Women’s League (VYCWL) is to accomplish goals and objectives to stimulate and promote participation in social and educational programs, to assist the VYC Trustees and Board in matters that will effect and benefit the club and its members. We will also support, develop, and organize charitable events to benefit select causes.
In 2015 the VYC Women’s League was voted by the membership to be in recess. Charitable events and donations will continue to be organized by its members.
